Members of a Disability Sports Coach (DSC) club got to meet five-time Paralympic swimming champion Ellie Simmonds recently.
Ellie attended a community session in London as an ambassador for Sure’s Breaking Limits Programme (BLP) and joined in a range of activities, including basketball, football and dodgeball.
Working alongside organisations such as DSC, the programme focuses on supporting young people to break down barriers to movement, equipping them with the confidence and opportunity to move however they want.
DSC is a proud partner of the Breaking Limits Programme, running inclusive community sports clubs across London and campaigning for equal access to sport and physical activity for disabled people. Its members may have physical, sensory or a learning disability and are typically locked out of mainstream sport.
“Everyone has the right to move and get active but there are too many barriers to sport and physical activity for disabled people,” said DSC founder and CEO Peter Ackred.
“We are delighted to have the support of Sure’s Breaking Limits Programme and to have hosted Ellie Simmonds at our Brent Club. DSC stands fully behind the Paralympics #EqualPlay campaign to end the inequality that sees just one in four disabled children take part in school sport.”
