A new outdoor mobility showcase is to take place alongside a much-loved family music festival.
NN Fest at Delapré Abbey on September 20 will be a celebration of community and live music with a line-up of tribute bands set in the grounds of one of Northampton’s most historic stately homes.
The Disabled Adventurer Nick Wilson (pictured above) and his brand new CIC, Access Outdoors, have collaborated with AJM Choice and several wheelchair manufacturers, to create a unique new feature: an all-terrain wheelchair demo zone where festivalgoers can try out powerchairs and other mobility equipment.
“For us, it’s all about inclusion and awareness,” said Jeremy Garman, Director of Private Pay at AJM Choice, a company that tailors mobility solutions designed to enhance independence and improve quality of life.
“We don’t manufacture wheelchairs, we focus on making sure people find the equipment that’s right for them, from any supplier. NN Fest gives us a chance to put accessibility in front of thousands of people in a fun, family-friendly setting. It’s about showing what’s possible.”
One of the highlights will be a specially designed woodland trail, giving visitors the chance to test outdoor mobility aids on grass and naturally undulating terrain, something many powered wheelchair users avoid due to fear of getting stuck.
Supported by suppliers, buddies and AJM Choice volunteers, small groups will be guided around the track every 15 minutes, offering a safe and supported way to experience off-road mobility.
“It’s fantastic to see NN Fest and Delapré Abbey embracing accessibility in such a positive way,” said Nick Wilson, who last year became the first disabled person to solo climb Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), using a purpose-built all-terrain powerchair.
“The all-terrain wheelchair demos in particular will challenge perceptions and give people the confidence to experience something new. This is about opening doors, or in this case, woodland paths, for everyone.”
While AJM Choice is helping coordinate the mobility showcase and supporting Nick, several suppliers will also be exhibiting powerchairs and adaptive equipment at the festival, ensuring visitors can see a wide variety of solutions.
