Grandad’s Adventures Raise Money for Spinal Injury Charities

A disabled author has raised more than £100,000 for charity through his series of popular children’s books.

Brian Abram, a former cyclist from Halifax who sustained a life-changing spinal cord injury in a devastating accident, raised the money for spinal injury charities through his self-published children’s book series, The Adventures of Grandad Wheels!.

Brian set himself the challenge of reaching £100,000 by Christmas 2025 and has proudly announced that he has surpassed that goal, dividing the funds between Spinal Injuries Association (SIA) and Back Up.

His achievement is the result of tireless fundraising, including 209 school visits, where he has inspired more than 40,000 children with his story and his mission to break down myths about disability.

“This is wonderful news and credit to Brian’s hard work,” said a spokesperson for Spinal Injuries Association.

“His fundraising means we can support even more of the 105,000 people in the UK living with spinal cord injury to lead fulfilled lives.”

In 2013, Brian’s life changed forever when a cycling accident left him paralysed from the waist down.

Rescued from a river by heroic passers-by, Brian faced months of rehabilitation and chronic pain. Inspired by his grandson Charlie’s questions about life in a wheelchair (pictured with the author above), Brian created Grandad Wheels—a fun, adventurous character who proves disability is no barrier to living life to the fullest.

Since publishing his first book in 2019, Brian has completed six titles.
