An Important Play

A theatre company that features an integrated cast of actors with disabilities both visible and invisible is to stage Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’.

The classic satirical tale, tackling Victorian society’s obsession with social status, marriage, and superficiality, will be staged by Dramaiocht Productions at OSC Arts Centre in Barnes from March 11-15.

Founded by renowned actor Mark Beer (pictured above), Dramaiocht Productions is one of the first theatre companies to give performers who’ve found themselves marginalised because of disability, race or gender, opportunities to showcase their talent and a stage on which to shine.

Mark, who plays the formidable, snobbish, and witty matriarch Lady Bracknell and directs this production of ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, has been in the industry for more than 35 years, playing a wide variety of roles on stage, television and film.

Born with second degree Cerebral Palsy and confined to a wheelchair, Mark was the first disabled presenter on children’s TV in BBC1’s ‘Playdays’, and the first disabled actor to play a leading role in a TV drama in BBC series ‘Specials’.
