A remixed tale of the star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet is being staged at one of the leading venues for children’s theatre in the UK.
Polka Theatre and Beats & Elements present a fresh version of Shakespeare’s most famous story, re-told through rap and rhythms. It’s 'Romeo and Juliet', but as you’ve never heard it before.
Forced apart by generations of hatred, young eyes meet across a South London dancefloor on a fateful night that will change their lives forever.
“We are delighted to be co-presenting a brand-new version of Romeo and Juliet,” said Helen Matravers, Polka Theatre’s Artistic Director.
“Beats & Elements rap and sing their way through the most famous Shakespearean story... only in this version Romeo and Juliet come from South London, and we've updated the story to resonate with pre-teen audiences.
“I am so proud that Polka is once again showing its dedication to making theatre accessible, diverse and inclusive - and a whole load of fun! “
This innovative production of Romeo and Juliet, which tells the story in 60 minutes and is recommended for 9-12+ year olds, runs until April 14 at the Polka Theatre in Wimbledon.
Accessible performances include Relaxed at 11.30am on March 17, Audio Described at 2.30pm (Touch Tour at 1.30pm) on April 3 and British Sign Language at 2.30pm on April 5.
