Paraorchestra Tunes up for US Debut

The renowned Paraorchestra will perform the music of Steve Reich at concerts in the UK and New York to mark the 90th year of the influential minimalist composer.

Bringing together professional disabled and non-disabled musicians, Paraorchestra will make their US debut when they present The Anatomy of the Orchestra: The Four Sections at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City on June 13.

Part-installation, part-concert, this is an opportunity to climb inside and get up close to the orchestra as they perform Reich's mesmerising The Four Sections led by conductor Charles Hazlewood

The Anatomy of the Orchestra: The Four Sections is presented in Paraorchestra's trademark immersive style, this time featuring 51 musicians positioned across the space, and the audience invited to move amongst each of the four sections of the orchestra.

Paraorchestra will return to the UK to perform Reich's seminal Music for 18 Musicians at their third BBC Proms at Bristol Beacon on August 7. Music for 18 Musicians was a revelation for orchestral music when it premiered fifty years ago and its influence continues across multiple genres, inspiring artists from David Bowie and Aphex Twin to Björk and LCD Soundsystem.

Music for 18 Musicians will be performed so that audience members can move amongst the ensemble and pulsing marimbas, pianos and vocals – the first time that Reich's masterpiece has been presented as an immersive live music experience.

Following the BBC Proms, Paraorchestra will perform Music For 18 Musicians at London's Southbank Centre (September 27), Sonica Glasgow (October 3) and Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester (November 27).

"Steve Reich is without doubt one of the most important composers of the last century and remains a major touchstone for me, as a music fan and as a conductor,” said Paraorchestra’s Artistic Dirctor Charles Hazlewood.

“We're incredibly excited to be celebrating his life and work in this, his 90th year, not just in the UK, but also in New York, where Minimalism started. With these performances we want audiences to allow themselves to be transported by some of the most extraordinary music ever made."
