Congratulations to Hari Budha Magar MBE who has won the Inspiration category at the prestigious Soldiering On Awards.
The former Gurkha has just three mountains left to tick off his bucket list to become the first double above knee amputee (DAK) to climb the highest peak on every continent.
He has already climbed to the iconic peaks of (Mt. Blanc (4,810m) in August 2019, Mt. Kilimanjaro (5,895m) in January 2020, Mt. Everest (8,849m) in May 2023 and North America’s highest peak Denali (6,190m) earlier this year.
That leaves Puncak Jaya (4,884m) in Oceania, Aconcagua (6,961m) in South America and Mt Vinson (4,892m) in Antarctica to climb.
The multi record-breaking climber from Canterbury is taking his message of ‘no legs, no limits’ around the world to inspire people everywhere that a disability and weakness just mean you might have to find a different way to achieve your dreams.
"Limitations are put on those with a disability all the time,” said Hari, who was presented with his Soldiering On Award by presenter and journalist Jeremy Vine.
“Yet most of the time a disability is not life limiting, it shouldn't stop us from chasing our dreams. It's all about adaptation. Climbing a mountain will take me about three times as long as a climber with all their limbs – but taking that extra time isn’t going to stop me doing it.
"Through the challenges I’m setting myself, I want to raise awareness of disability and positively change the way people with disabilities are perceived and how they think about themselves and what they can do.”
Hari has launched an appeal (www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/hbm7summits) to raise funds to enable his climbs and the positive impact it will generate in changing people’s perceptions of what is possible for people of disability.
