A webinar is to address the urgent safety challenges faced by mobility scooter users.
With casualties rising annually and riders facing a raft of significant risks on their journeys, the webinar will provide critical insight for road safety professionals on tackling the issues.
Mobility scooter users are among the most vulnerable road users, yet many road safety teams have unintentionally overlooked them because, in casualty data, they’re grouped under ‘Other vehicle occupants’ - a category overshadowed by the rise in e-scooter casualties.
In 2023 alone, 16 mobility scooter users were killed and 80 seriously injured on our roads.
Now a team including Professor Duncan Guest (Nottingham Trent University), Warwickshire Road Safety Partnership and Surewise insurance company have joined forces with Project EDWARD to bring this overlooked issue to national attention - combining expert insight, lived experience and evidence-led solutions.
Key areas for discussion during the webinar on May 8 (11am - 12noon) will include:
Vulnerabilities and abuse - exploring rising incidents of harassment and physical attacks, including strategies to mitigate conflict and improve public awareness of user challenges.
User-device matching – discussing best practices for aligning scooter models with individual needs, addressing concerns around inadequate training and improper vehicle selection.
Regulatory gaps and safety innovations - examining the lack of mandatory hazard training and review evidence-based hazard awareness training using real-world footage.
